Civil War monuments still evocative Times Union Copyright 2012 Times Union. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Updated 09:54 a.m., Monday, December 12, 2011 The inspiring statue shows an infantryman standing at parade rest, vigilant and stoic, a reminder that 500,000 New Yorkers fought and 50,000 lost their lives in the Civil War. The statue of the enlisted man at parade rest shows no sign of rank. Just opposite is statue of a commanding general, such as that of Philip Sheridan, who hailed from Albany, in a prominent position at the base of the state Capitol's grand staircase. The GAR's imprint is clearly seen in the iconography of most of the Civil War monuments, said Ray Smith of Altamont, a retired state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation official who developed an interest in the sites while traveling around the state on the job. Smith pointed out that the Civil War soldiers' experience created an army of statues whose legions far surpass those of subsequent wars. The Civil War in American Memory, David W. Blight notes that ceremonies for the dedication of the monuments emphasized the theme of reconciliation between North and South. Veterans' reunions and monument unveilings (by the semicentennial in virtually every hamlet, town, and city) served as public gestures of social cohesion in the distended industrial age. Albany's monument features an allegorical, heroic female symbolizing the Nation who bears the palms of peace and a sheathed sword of war, according to a description in the 1917 "Albany Guide Book" by John D. Whish. [...] included, according to Whish's description, are Patriotism "inspiring a drummer boy" and a soldier who has returned home to greet his family. "There was a crude wooden building where they tacked up the names of soldiers wounded, missing and killed in action in the Civil War," said Kathryn Sheehan, the Rensselaer County historian. The GAR's work is carried on by its successor organization, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, which is tracking down memorials and working to preserve those that need restoration.

Library cuts spur vote Times Union Copyright 2012 Times Union. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Published 10:10 p.m., Saturday, October 22, 2011 Confronting a cut in the town's financial support, Round Lake Library will go to town voters on Nov. 8 to ask them to approve spending $291,000 for library operations. If the library doesn't get voters' support at the polls, it will be forced to reduce hours and services at its two branches. State education law, however, allows the library to seek voters' backing at the polls. In information provided to voters, the library says the tax implication for making up the $76,000 between the $291,000 in the proposition and the $215,000 allocated in the town budget would be a tax of five cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation. Voting will be held during the general election at the town's polling places from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Nov. 8.

Published 12:00 a.m., Saturday, September 10, 2011 Embattled Milton Supervisor Frank Thompson faces a challenge from Dan Lewza, a former legislative staffer, in Tuesday's Republican primary election. Thompson said he made a mistake when he filled out financial disclosure forms this year and neglected to list his wife's part-time job with Belmont Management, a company that owns three senior living complexes in Milton. The supervisor said the allegations linked to him are part of a political witch hunt. At Town Board meetings, Lewza has criticized the supervisor and the board as a whole for failing to answer questions from the public. If elected, Lewza said he will put a plan in place to attract jobs to Milton and take advantage of the chip fab industry growing in Malta while maintaining the rural character for the town's 18,000 residents. Lewza spent nine years as the community relations director in the state Assembly before a brief stint as chief of staff for Assemblyman Tony Jordan, R-Jackson, in 2008, followed by a job in the state Senate's rural resources committee.

Updated 09:21 a.m., Thursday, August 11, 2011 Tom Boghosian, a Milton resident and a local developer, said Supervisor Frank Thompson is right when he said he is the subject of a State Police investigation because of "politics." Deborah Thompson, 62, was charged in April with stealing more than $30,000 from a resident of the county nursing home as she was acting as the woman's financial guardian. The first question on the form is to list "all blood relatives who are town employees or officials" and "any office, trusteeship, directorship or position of any nature, whether compensated or uncompensated, held by you or your spouse, with any proprietorship, partnership, corporation or other organization, which at present or during the prior 12 months, does business with the town." In 2005, he listed her employer as Belmont Management Co., the owner of three senior citizen apartment buildings in the town. According to the state penal code, a person is guilty of the offense when, "knowing that a written instrument contains a false statement or false information, and with intent to defraud the state or any political subdivision, public authority or public benefit corporation of the state, he offers or presents it to a public office, public servant, public authority or public benefit corporation with the knowledge or belief that it will be filed with, registered or recorded in or otherwise become a part of the records of such public office, public servant, public authority or public benefit corporation."

Updated 02:54 a.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2011 Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy III announced State Police are handling a complaint in connection with Thompson's town ethics disclosure forms. Sira is handling the case against Thompson's wife, Deborah Thompson, who was charged with grand larceny, accused of stealing nearly $35,000 from a resident of the county nursing home for whom she was acting as financial guardian. Police also investigated Frank Thompson in the grand larceny case, but Ackerman said he has found no evidence that Thompson benefitted from or was even aware of his wife's activities. According to Frank Thompson, the couple is estranged. Thompson said the political persecution started when he said he would not support the Board of Supervisors' plan to increase the county sales tax a quarter of a percent to 3.25 percent.
