Meet the Staff

Angela McFarland – Publisher

Publisher Angela McFarland has lived in Ballston Spa for 12 years with husband Mark, a self-employed contractor, their 10-year old son Eric, and is an active, proud just-like-a-mom to Mark Jr., Tanner, Ian and Hunter McFarland ages 21, 18, 16 and 11 years old respectively. They are a busy family with Capital District roots, extended family in the area and are members of the Ballston Spa Presbyterian Church.

Professionally, McFarland holds extensive advertising and media sales experience, small business development expertise emphasizing sales leadership, human resource management and accounting practices, is a member of the Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association,  the Malta Business & Professional Association and the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Business Association as well as the New York Press Association. She has also served as a committee member for the F.A.N.S. Kelley Park Playground Project and is President of the Ballston Spa Rotary Club.

McFarland publishes four local media:  The Ballston Journal, Our Towne Ballston Spa, Our Towne Saratoga and the newest edition Our Towne Malta.

Dan Sabbatino – Managing Editor

Dan Sabbatino is an award-winning journalist with experience covering local and state politics in the Capital District since 2007. He has served as news editor for the SUNY Albany flagship paper the Albany Student Press, covered state politics for the Legislative Gazette during the tumultuous beginnings of the Eliot Spitzer administration and Alan Hevesi scandal and covered municipal government in Guilderland, New Scotland, Colonie and other localities while at the Spotlight Newspaper.
Among his accolades are a New York Press Association Better Newspaper Contest Award for a news series dealing with the “big-box” debate in New Scotland and a presidential leadership award at UAlbany.  He resides in Colonie with his wife, Alyssa and her younger brother, Tim.

Sam Capuano – Special Features

Reporter Sam Capuano’s interest in writing began when he wrote for his high school newspaper at Burnt Hills, and similarly did so for the Providence College “Cowl.” His first professionally published work appeared in the “Saratogian” in the 1990′s. A financial institution auditor by day, Capuano is a regular contributor to the nationally published “Audit Report” magazine. He has twice been awarded the “Article of the Year” award for that publication. Capuano also wrote a chapter for the book, “Ballston Spa Legacies Unlimited” in 2009.

He is very active locally, volunteering his time coaching youth sports for his 2 children, and is a long time board member of the Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association and a current member of the New York Press Association.

Jennie Grey – Town of Malta

Jennie wrote her seventh grade “Careers” paper on journalism and has stuck faithfully to the field ever since. After a stint as an AFS exchange student in Norway, she earned her degree at even colder Syracuse University in magazine journalism and linguistics. She has worked in the New York City publishing industry for magazines as diverse as Modern Romances and Corporate Videoconferencing. She’s also freelanced as a writer and editor. Now she is excited to be part of the Journal team and the local scene.

Jennifer Farnsworth – Special Features

Jennifer Farnsworth has been writing and reporting for several Capital Region weekly and daily newspapers for almost ten years. Farnsworth began her love for writing at SUNY Morrisville where she received an A.A.S in Journalism, later transferring to SUNY Oneonta where she completed her B.A. in Media Communications. During college, she worked as a part time radio news reporter and correspondent.

Whether it’s coaching or heading up PTO activities, Jen and her husband Brian and are kept busy by their two sons, Kyle and Andrew, ages eight and six.

Greg Birbilis – Sports

Sports Reporter Greg Birbilis is a “Semi” retired Physical Education Teacher, Department Head, Adjunct Professor at Springfield College, Interim Assistant Principal and Athletic Director and has worked for the Ballston Journal for over 30 years.

He is a member of the NY Press Association, North American Snowsports Journalists Association, Eastern Ski Writers Association and has been involved in a number of sport related activities in and a round the Ballston Spa Community.

Joe Templin

Joe Templin made the unusual transition from applied physicist to financial planner fifteen years ago, and has since collected more degrees than a thermometer. He has worked with thousands of individuals and hundreds of organizations to help them be better from a financial, organizational, and visionary standpoint. Joe’s best selling books include “Top Tax Plays” and “The Financial Mistakes of New College Grads”, an N’Digo “Top 10 Business Book” for 2009.

Joe is the Head Geek of the Unique Minds Consulting Group, LLC in Ballston Spa and has written for numerous national publications as well as speaking all over the country. He and wife Ambre are proud RPI alums, as will someday be their hooligans Danny (age 5), Liam (3), and Colin (due in October). Joe is also a die hard Yankees fan, and you should be jealous because he went to THE Opening Day at The Stadium. He tweets as “MillenialMoney” and “TheRealHeadGeek”.
